Try This Quick & Nutritious Rye Bread Recipe at Home

What is Rye Bread?

Rye bread is a type of bread that is made from rye flour derived from rye grain. Rye bread is chewy in texture, nutty in flavour, very rich in fibre, and filled with essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Its range of health benefits has recently made rye bread a very popular choice for breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Freshly baked rye bread is very easily available in your bakeries nearby. However, you can also make it at home following this quick and easy-to-follow recipe by our experienced bakers.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups rye flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 tbsp)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon honey or molasses
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 tablespoons caraway seeds
  • Any other seeds for topping (optional)

Step-to-Step Instructions

Now, let’s dive into a simple recipe to make your own delicious rye bread at home.

Step 1: Prepare Yeast

Add water and yeast to a large mixing bowl and let it sit for 10 minutes.

Step 2: Add all the Ingredients

Combine the rye flour, all-purpose flour, caraway seeds, oil and salt and mix well until the texture of the mixture becomes smooth and flat.

Step 3: Knead the Dough

Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface with wet hands for about 5-7 minutes or until smooth and elastic.

Step 4: Set the Dough in the Bowl

Evenly spread oil in the bowl and place the dough in the greased bowl to coat the dough in oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or damp cloth and let it sit for 2-4 hours at room temperature.

Step 5: Let The Dough Rise

Be patient with the dough; let it rise to double its size before baking. Keep checking every once in a while, and once it is doubled in size, it means it is ready for the next step, i.e. baking.

Step 6: Preheat Your Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the loaf on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and sprinkle caraway seeds or other seeds on top of the loaf.

Step 7: Bake

Bake the rye bread in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 8: Slice & Serve

It is important to let the bread cool down completely before slicing and serving. You can serve it with a variety of dips and fillings.
